This document presents the robust research and data-backed foundation underpinning WE Soda’s Sustainability Plan and broader value proposition. It focuses on the evidence that substantiates two key principles that are core to our business – that soda ash makes a meaningful contribution to sustainable development, and that our natural soda ash has important and unique sustainability virtues.
Despite not being a household name, soda ash serves as an essential enabler of everyday modern life. Beyond its importance in daily consumer products, soda ash is a fundamental input into a wide range of industries that directly and indirectly support sustainable development. It underpins cleaner technologies, supports resource efficiency, and, in doing so, contributes to environmental, economic, and social progress.

The global trends of climate change, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, resource circularity, social inequality and geopolitical instability are interconnected and escalating challenges with far reaching consequences that have shaped, and will continue to shape, the soda ash industry and society more broadly. Staying abreast of the latest science is essential to safeguard and extend our competitive advantage. It also forms the basis of our double materiality assessment.
Materiality, i.e. focusing on what matters, is a fundamental concept of corporate and financial functions, and the absence of its consideration in decision making often gives rise to inefficiencies and limited progress.
Our approach to Double Materiality is to plot each of the 47 trends onto what we call 'dartboards'. WE Soda created ‘dartboards’ for each of our 5 Ps. The closer the issue came to the centre of the dart board, the more material the issue is. The results of our findings can be seen in Case for Change.
